I’ve seen it repeatedly, where local small business owners have a website for their business that is totally ineffective, non functional or produces little to no money for the business. Most business owners paid outrageous sums of money to have even the simplest website built, in hopes that it would drive traffic to their stores, restaurants or service related business.

Unfortunately, most small business owners do not know that the old saying “build it….and they will come!” does not apply to the internet. Just because a business puts up a website, it doesn’t mean that customers will come. There are a few things that need to be done first, like having the proper “search engine optimization”, customer ease in navigating the website and what I consider most important, a way to “capture visitors” and get them on your mailing list so you can sell to them another time.

There are many local web designers who do create nice looking websites but there are many who know nothing about getting high rankings in Google or other top search engines. Local small business owners need to interview web designers much like they do their employees.

Three important factors MUST go into designing a website that not only is eye appealing and captures the essence of the business, it must also be constructed in a way that it can be found by search engines. Also, it must employ certain “Marketing Techniques” to ensure your shiny new website creates a ROI (return on investment).

A website is an extension of your business. Treat it as a valued employee, one that “earns his/her keep”. Website’s, especially business websites need to:

  • Attract and “capture” new customers (changing website visitors into paying customers)
  • Aid in keeping existing customers (creating customer loyalty)
  • Have the look and feel of your “brick an mortar” business.
  • Have ways to produce sales (monetized with products, gift cards and gift certificates, customer rewards)
  • Be optimized for search engines in order to gain top rankings, driving in a steady flow of new traffic on a regular basis.

    It’s rare when you can find a web designer with all three qualifications of being not only a top notch web designer, who can capture the vision of the business, but also being a “programmer” who knows the inner workings of websites and knows how to get it seen in front of your competitors, and one who is also a well versed internet marketer, who knows the value of monetization and can add techniques that squeeze dollars out of customers.

    I laugh when I see local web designers who claim to offer SEO (search engine optimization) when in fact all they do is submit your website to search engines and local directories. Far more is needed to assure your website ranks highly in local searches. More people everyday are using the internet instead to the yellow pages to perform local searches for stores, restaurants, services. They comparison shop online before coming to your store to buy, or compare menu’s before visiting your restaurant, or see who offers the most for services such as lawyers, doctors, dentists, hair salons, landscapers, plumbers, etc….

    If your website does not perform well in local searches, all I can say is if your employees were not performing, you would have no problem firing them, right? You need to re-evaluate, re-design, bring in the right “all around” designer who knows what it takes to get seen and make you money.

    The sad part is, so many local Tucson small businesses that do have websites, find them to be unproductive, ineffective, and are treated like a “digital business card” instead of a “customer grabbing, sale generating” machine.

    If your business does not yet have a web presence, you should!! Don’t go by price…if you go cheap, that’s exactly what you will get in return…a cheap looking website that doesn’t work. Your website reflects your business. Make sure it has proper SEO and has ways to make you money. Build it so it grows your customer base, so you can communicate with your customers, offering them news of sales and upcoming business events, customer discounts and rewards, better customer service. There are many ways to do this, for any type of business.

    97% Failure Rate for Most Affilaite Marketers

    There is a saying,

     ”If you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day.

    If you Teach a man to fish, he can eat for a lifetime”.

    Most affiliate marketers fail to make money online. All the proven statistics state this as fact. Why? Lack of effort? NO….lack of education? YES!!  Education on the product, on techniques, on the entire “internet marketing” process. People see all those ads or ebooks of “self proclaimed guru’s” stating that they made thousands of dollars using a certian ”technique”, or that they “Broke the Code” for Google Adsense. People jump at the chance to make a quick buck, so they buy the ebook, thinking it’s all true, follow what the very inventive “Guru” says and they never see a dime. Ok, maybe a few bucks, which barely off-sets the google listing fee’s or the cost of this ebook. But where is that $31,576.00 that the “guru” claims to have made in 1 day? Didn’t it say “Follow my Step by Step Methods and you will reap vast rewards”? Face it, the only ones making any money are these idiots hocking bogus ebooks, and he makes it off unsuspecting, uneducated people looking for a quick payday.

    Look….be honest with yourself. If all this hype was true, and it was so easy to make a killing in marketing, Google Adsense, or most of these so called money generating programs, there would be no poverty in this world. There would be no need for welfare systems. Goverments around the world would just give out computers and tell people to go make that $31,576.00 everyday. There would be no need for charities like ”Save the Children” or “Unicef”, and we all would be driving fancy cars and have huge homes. Why? Because everyone would have that ebook. Am I right? Think about it when you see that next “quick fix scam” some slick con-man dreamed up. There’s a new one out there everyday it seems.

    Now….let’s take that saying above, and apply it to Internet Marketing.

    If you give a man a “quick fix scam”, maybe he can earn for a day (by unloading it on others)…..If you Teach  a man to properly educate himself with a plan, the right tools, the ways & means to properly implement them, the patience to know “when & where”, …he can earn for a lifetime. Makes sense doesn’t it?
    I have adopted this saying into our marketing plan also: “if you give a man a One Time Sale, he can eat for a day….If you educate a man about Residual Income, he will eat for a lifetime.”

    If you stop and look at what the few True Marketers say, even they say they struggled in the beginning, that they didn’t make much money and where about to throw in the towel. But they stuck with it and took that “lean period” and learned everything they could. Educating themselves by “trail and error” techniques” until things started falling into place for them where they actually started to earn a living from all this. But it took years.  Not days!! Understand this and that will be your first step to educating yourself.

    Moral of the story is:

    • There are NO QUICK FIXES, no ONE STEP PLANS!! Except that as fact! Look at the “Big Picture”.
    • Take the time to look into all this. There are many facets to Internet Marketing, and you need to know most all of them in order to see results. The few who do make a living online learned how to “merge” these different facets, to make a path to follow.
    • Take time to “weed out” the true marketers from those “self proclaimed guru’s”. Read their blogs, visit their websites, try to understand the path they are on. Never be affraid to contact them and ask questions. A True Marketer is always willing to help those who ask.
    • Do Not Quit your day job just yet…..Educate yourself first!! Make a plan, follow it. You will see results in the long run. Most “wanna-be” marketers do not see the big picture, only seeing that “quick payday pipe dream”. Those are the ones who will fail.
    • Education, Patience, Diligents, Trial and Error, Creativity, Contacts, Tracking your Efforts and Timing….These all factor in a future in Internet Marketing.
